First Training Center for Outsourced Services in China Set Up in TEDA

Sherrysha August 3rd, 2007

Recently, the Ministry of Commerce and Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (”TEDA”) officially signed a letter of intent for cooperation to establish the “China Training Center for Outsourced Services”. It is one of the important measures taken by the Ministry of Commerce to support the development and opening of the New Binghai Area and the first experimental talent-training center of the Ministry of Commerce in China for outsourced services. This center will provide high-quality talent for service-outsourcing companies in the New Binghai Area, Tianjin and the Bohai-Rim Area and provide a new mode and mechanism for training of talents for outsourced services.

Ma Xiuhong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, noted in the signing ceremony that outsourced services has achieved great progress since implementation of the “Thousand, Hundred and Ten Projects” more than a year ago. Developing outsourced services involves extensive work and talent training is an indispensable part of it. The New Binghai Area should also take the leading role in the global high-end outsourced service of talent training after it becomes a new economic growth area in the country.

According to the letter of intent, the Ministry of Commerce will accord the outsourced service industry of TEDA the corresponding policy and relevant support and TEDA promises to train 10,000 to 20,000 talented people every year for service-outsourcing companies in conformity with their requirements and will try to increase the number of people engaged in outsourced service in TEDA to between 50,000 and 60,000 by 2010. Meanwhile, TEDA will establish the “TEDA Development Fund for Outsourced Services” with 100 million yuan to maximize the social result of such training.

The establishment of this training center will ease two difficulties, i.e. the difficulty for university graduates to find jobs and the difficulty for enterprises to find suitable people, by bridging the two and guiding university students to seek employment opportunities in the outsourced services industry. Meanwhile, the training center will develop customized training according to the requirements of service-outsourcing companies and train technical and management personnel at various levels.

About Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA)

Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) was established in 1984 with the approval of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. It is one of the first state-class economic-technological development areas in the country.

TEDA is located in the center of a larger area bordering Bohai Sea and the east of the Asia-Europe Land Bridge, thus serving as the gate to the two super cities of Beijing and Tianjin, and the throat connecting the northeast of China. By the end of 2006, 4,299 foreign companies have landed in TEDA. Of the Fortune 500 companies, 57 multinational companies, from 10 countries and regions, including such well-established multinational giants as Motorola, Samsung and Toyota, invested in 123 enterprises in TEDA. In 2000, “Fortune” listed TEDA as one of the most highly recommended economic areas in China. In 2002 UNIDO listed TEDA as one of the most dynamic areas of China together with Shenzhen, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Shanghai Pudong and Xi’an High-tech Park.

Foreign Institutions Investing in Indian Real Estate

VioletStar January 2nd, 2007

India changed its policy in February 2005 that allowed foreign investment of upto 100% in construction development projects with fast-track approvals. The return on investment could be as high as 25% which is a real attraction to foreign institutions.

International funds had reportedly invested some $2.5 billion in Indian real estate. Goldman Sachs’ Whitehall Street Real Estate Funds planned to invest up to $1 billion in Indian , real estate, private equity, wealth management, and other businesses in India for its clients. CalPERS (California Public Employees’ Retirement System) also invested $100 million in a $400 million real estate fund in India.

The policy reform in india reduced the minimum development project size requirement from 100 acres to 25 acres for housing, and about 8 acres for other property development types. However, in order to attract serious investors, foreign investors need a minimum capitalization of $5 million for joint ventures and $10 million for wholly-owned subsidiaries.

Investors from Asia has been rising the current of India’s construction development industry. Large development companies from Singapore such as Ascendas, CapitaLand and Keppel Land have already had projects in india. In June 2005, Ascendas launched the International Tech Park in Bangalore and the Vanenburg IT Park in Hyderabad. Keppel Land also has built a few IT parks. The Salim Group of Indonesia, has proposed four investment projects with various concepts in West Bengal.

Real estate experts believe Indian real estate is unlikely to face speculative bubbles like those in other Asian markets in the mid-to-late 1990s. India pursues conservative “floor space indices” or “floor area ratio”, which measure the relationship between the size of a lot and the total space that can be built on it. That index is between 1 and 2 in most Indian markets, while in land-constrained Hong Kong, it went up to more than 10.

Beauty Trend in China – latest visit to Hong Kong

VioletStar December 21st, 2006

I have been out of the country in the past few weeks: Flying to Hong Kong right after Thanksgiving. Then I flew to Guam (it is a US military base, 4 hours from Hong Kong) to attend my brother’s wedding and got back to Hong Kong on Dec 1. I was back to the US on Dec 4. A business trip took me to UK and Belgium on Dec 6. I was so jet lagged and sleepy by then that my wallet was pickpocked in Brussels! I did not know how that happened and the only thing I knew was the horrible 2.5 hours that I spent at hotel lobby to cancel all my credit cards!

That was why I did not write for a few weeks. But I did get a chance networking with my family and friends and some business partners in various places. I also picked up some new trend in the area. I could not resist not sharing the latest beauty trend that was sweeping through the region. Although I have lived in the western side of the globe for quite some time, the asian way of beautifying always apply better on ME! For all the guy readers, bear with me for this time.

The two most latest trends were PU leather dressy shoes and “Big Eyes” contact lens.

PU leather is also called Bicast Leather. It looks extremely shiny on surface. It is made with a thick layer of polyurethane layer applying to a leather service. The PU leather shoes can be worn with work clothes and the shoes just made you look smart. Black and Red color PU leather shoes are the main characters but all the other fun colors (green, blue, orange, pink…) are all welcomed! I wore a black pair to work and got a lot of enquires on where to get them. Send me a comment and I can give you some tips to find them.

The “Big Eyes” contact lens are something really new and NOVEL to me. These are not color contact lens. These are contact lens that can make the iris of the eye look bigger. The key manufacturers of “Big Eyes” contact lens are from Korea. These bigger eyes make the face of the person look cuter and sweeter and seem like they could talk. However since these contact lens are not very air permeable they could not be worn more than 8 hours. I am very tempted to give it a try!

Chinese President’s Recent Visit to India

VioletStar November 23rd, 2006

Chinese President Hu Jin Tao’s visit to India this week has raised a lot of buzz in the region as well as internationally. The two fastest growing economies discussed promotion, investment and bilateral trade. Both sides declared that comprehensive economic and commercial engagement between the two countries was a core component to their strategic and cooperative partnership. In money term, the volume of bilaternal trade will be increaded by USD40 million by 2010!

Hu’s visit was of highly symbolic and strategic significance. The two countries had border dispute since 1962 and have not been at ease with each other. Yet they acknowledged the importance of having alliances to their economy and entered into a new level of the world stage. A lot of people focussed this visit on bilateral trade. In fact, another important issue is around energy reserves. Both countries are looking for ways to secure a supply of natural gas and oil to sustain the rocket growing economies. China failed attempt to acquire US oil company earlier this year urges them to create a regional energy market. Working with India and other regional players to build a network of pipelines and promote stable supply is critical to the country. The collaboration with India will also help them to have a better negotiation situation with the Middle East.
After talking to Hu, Mr Manmoham Singh, Prime Minister, of India said that there was enough space for the two countries to develop together in a mutually supportive manner.
The world will continue to see how the Couching Tiger will work with Hidden Dragon peacefully!
